Porter Airlines: The Little Airline People Keep Talking About

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much the first time I booked a Porter Airlines ticket. I’d heard bits and pieces from friends — some swore it was their favourite way to fly, others didn’t even know it existed. But after a couple of trips, I get the hype. It’s a small airline that somehow makes flying feel less like a chore and more like… well, a nice day out.

Checking In Without the Stress

If you’ve ever been stuck in a massive check-in line, you know how quickly a trip can start going downhill. Porter’s check-in feels different. Their online system is simple, and at the airport it’s usually quick to drop your bag and get moving. At big airports like LAX, they have their own little corner, which makes it feel less like you’re being herded with the masses. It’s a small thing, but it sets the mood for the whole trip.

Onboard: More Than Just Getting From A to B

Once you’re on the plane, the differences really stand out. You get free snacks (actual decent ones), a drink or two, and seats that don’t feel like they were designed to punish you. The crew? Friendly without that fake “smile at all costs” vibe. It’s not luxury travel, but it’s comfortable, and that’s enough to win me over.

Is It Safe?

Short answer — yes. Porter has a clean safety record and follows strict Canadian aviation rules. I’ve flown with them in all kinds of weather, and while you might get the odd delay up north when the snow really comes down, they generally keep things running on time.

Who’s Behind Porter Airlines?

For those who like knowing the business side of things, Porter is privately owned by the Porter family through Porter Aviation Holdings. They have been increasing their itineraries, including more U.S. locations, and introducing new jets in recent years. They are aiming high, as evidenced by their presence at LAX, but they have so far maintained the impression of a “smaller airline.”

Should You Give It a Try?

Porter might not be your first pick if you’re looking for really low prices. However, it’s something to think about if you value comfort, easier check-ins, and an airline that still treats customers like individuals. It’s not flawless, but to be honest, that’s part of what gives it a genuine feel.
