A few times in 2018, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom made headlines due to rumors that Amber Heard tenure as Mera was coming to an end after she lost a well-publicized defamation lawsuit against her ex-husband, Johnny Depp.

Depp prevailed in his multimillion dollar lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard in June of last year. Depp received $10.35 million after his legal team proved that Heard’s 2018 Washington Post opinion piece, in which she discussed being abused but omitted Depp’s name, was defamatory.
$2 million was granted to Heard in her countersuit.

Following the decision, both sides filed a series of appeals, but in December, Heard’s agreement to pay Depp $1 million resulted to a final settlement between the parties.

There were even reports at one point that Warner Bros. was trying to find a replacement actress to play Mera in the sequel to 2018’s successful box office run. Heard was reportedly fired from the role. As these discussions heated up, Emilia Clarke, Jason Momoa’s former Game of Thrones co-star, became one of the actresses that fans were most interested in having play Mera in place of Heard.

Even though it is known that Amber Heard will reprise her role as Mera in the film, fans are nonetheless excited to watch Clark play the part. Additionally, fans now get the opportunity to see what Clarke may look like if she were to replace Heard in the role thanks to an incredible new fan art! Despite the apparent enthusiasm among fans for Emilia Clarke to play Mera in the next Aquaman sequel, Warner Bros. Discovery chose not to recast the part, while executives acknowledged that they were thinking about it.

President of DC Films Walter Hamada disclosed during his testimony at the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial earlier this year that discussions are on hold over recasting the part because of a bonding issue between Heard and Jason Momoa, the movie’s main character.

In the end, it was decided not to recast Heard for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but since James Gunn and Peter Safran are trying to revitalize the DCU, there’s always a good chance the role will change in the future.
